Eyewear Trends: The Onesie Lens

Just because you can’t Rx a frame, doesn’t mean that eyecare professionals shouldn’t sell it or offer it to their customers. Case in point: The Onesie Lens.

Most people think of a onesie as a one piece infant garment. Onesies are also adult jumpsuits which became popular in the late 2000’s to 2010’s. Re-introduced by the band Jumping Jammerz and seen on TV shows such a Pajama Party, MadTV, CSI Las Vegas. Onesies have appeared in the Oscars and the Emmy’s and worn by celebrities as Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus.

Onesie’s go back years but were known by other names: Long Johns ( the Union Suit), the 1940’s look called the Siren Suit, Jumpsuits in 1970’s. Catsuits 1980’s.. you get the picture.

Fashionable Onesie Lenses go back to back to the 1940’s. and were called by a variety of names: Masks, Shields and Face Flatterers. Taking a cue from the skiing goggle, Face Flattering ads showed active people wearing a one lens mask. The Face Flatterers continued throughout the 1950’s.

In the 1940’s Vogue as claimed sunglasses as the new cosmetic.. One of the first  onesie lens was in a 1959 Vogue Fashion layout with Anne St. Marie. The birth of the large square and orange sunglass.

The 1960’s brought about Mod and Space Age Fashion. The Onesie Lens was perfect for a space age or futuristic look. One of the hot trend looks was the plexi-glass or an acrylic lens one piece sunglass. Colorful blues, greens, reds yellows, oranges and clear lenses made vibrant fashion statements. Tura, one of the first fashion eyewear companies launched a Onesie lens in collaboration with Peter Max in the 1970’s. (See Tura and Peter Max) This is important in eyewear history for two reasons, the first known collaboration with an artist and the first known Onesie with artistic detailing.

Previously Onesies were round or square shaped. The Met Museum has several vibrant shields in triangular wraps and unusual temples.

The 1980’s designers were learning the power ($$) in licensing and brand building. Sunglasses didn’t need to be Rx’d and the Onesie look continued to thrive.
