Why do I Choose Trivex for my Eyeglasses?

Wearing my new Flair rimless frames and Trinity HD lenses by Augen

Actually, I didn’t start off making this choice myself but as I have a habit of picking out new optical frames that are drilled rimless, the lab usually tells me to provide lenses in Trivex material as it is the least affected by drilling, which reduces or eliminates the possibility of star cracks or breakage. That same tensile strength and lack of notch sensitivity allows thinner edges on grooved semi rimless since the groove wall is unlikely to chip or flake.

However, I choose them myself now as I personally like the thinness and lightness without giving up optical clarity. I have a minus correction in one eye and plus correction in the other so thin edges are important and with my Trivex lenses the different lens edge thickness is hardly noticeable. As far as clarity, Trivex has an ABBE value of 45 which produces lens clarity virtually equivalent to CR39.

Trivex has a unique combination of properties:

  • Lightness
  • Thinness
  • Abbe value
  • Impact Resistance
  • 100% UV protection

As with any lens material, you will find that there are best uses for Trivex material while other situations may call for a different material for a particular patient’s needs. Your optical laboratory if a great resource for lens information and education. There is a a very useful Trivex CE available online from Mark Mattison-Shupnick and the 20/20 Opticianry Study Center. PPG updated the website  and there is an excellent Trivex online training guide.

Lenses made with Trivex material are available in clear, photochromic and sun including polarized from a broad range of optical lens manufacturer and sunglass brands. All NXT performance sun lenses are made with Trivex.

Virtually all lens manufacturers offer lenses made in Trivex material for example Phoenix from Hoya Vision, Centurion and Trinity from Augen Optics. Signet Armorlite, Shamir and Carl Zeiss all offer Trivex in their proprietary designs. This makes it very easy to choose Trivex for my eyeglasses. I am enjoying my new Trinity HD lenses by Augen Optics which were fabricated for me by Precision Optical here in San Diego.
