Paid Time Off (PTO) Planning

It’s the beginning of the year and one starts thinking about vacation schedules, time off and personal days. This might be the time to review the employee manual, policies and procedures as the New Year progresses. Make sure the policies are clear and concise, as well as dealing with Time Off abuse and termination of employment.

What to consider:

  1. Vacation Days: How many days after how much time. Is time accrued through out the year? Is it a use it or lose it program? Does vacation time accrue when their is unpaid time off?  How much time in advance do you need to schedule?
  2. Jury Duty: Will you pay for jury duty? If so how many days?

  3. Funeral: Will you pay for funeral days? If so, for what friend or relative?
  4. Medical Leave (Paid or unpaid) This can be a long term illness or pregnancy.
  5. Sick Time: (Paid and Unpaid) Sick time allows for paid time off for employees who are unable to work for sick reasons which can be family related. Can sick days be accrued? Can Sick days be rolled over to personal days? Some companies allow for XXX paid sick days a year.
  6. Religious Holidays: Which religious holidays will you pay or not pay for? Must be specific.
  7. Paid Holidays: Does Christmas fall on a weekday? If so will you pay for it? What about 4th of July? Memorial Day? Labor Day? Easter? Presidents Day?
  8. Personal Days: Many companies allow personal days in addition to sick days.
  9. Weather Day? If the office is in areas in which heavy rains, snows or storms can be a deterrent will you pay for those days?

Vacation and Time off is important to productivity and our mental health. Having a good policy in place and planning for time off will help to run the office more efficiently and profitability.
