Google Expands Mobilegeddon In May

Mobile FriendlyLast April, Google began favoring websites that were mobile-friendly over websites that were not on mobile devices. Dubbed Mobilegeddon, that algorithm change meant that those websites who were still using outdated code that only appeared correctly on desktop computers were going to show up behind those websites that were mobile friendly. Last year, by our count about 75% of all ECP websites were not mobile friendly, giving a slight edge to the 25% that were. Even today, less than half of all ECP websites are mobile-friendly.

On March 16, 2016, Google announced that the mobile-friendly signal is being expanded, beginning this May, giving even higher preference to those websites that are mobile friendly, on a page by page basis. That means those sites that only created a mobile friendly introductory or home page will want to make sure every page on their website is mobile-friendly.

As all the ECP web experts have mentioned time and again throughout 2015, mobile searches and mobile website visits are now eclipsing desktop searches. If your practice website is still only built to be seen on a desktop computer, you are losing traffic to websites that can seen on any smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop. Even if you show up high in search, the user experience you provide your potential patients and customers will pale compared to your competitor down the street whose website is mobile-friendly.

For those of you who are attending Vision Expo East in New York this April, this would be the time to talk to the ECP web experts there to get started on mobilizing your practice website. Some will have booths you can visit, others will be speaking at various seminars, and still others will be attending the show, just like you.
