Eyecare Trends Part 8: Made To Order Eyewear

We first reported back in 2014 Game Changing Eyewear Trends on the Personalization and Customization of Eyewear. Over the last several years, we have seen this trend rise and become affordable. You can find Design Your Own Eyewear from Zenni Optical to Prada. This is not just for the upscale wearer anymore.

While customization of products has been driven by the Internet, eyecare wholesalers have developed technology and products for the ECP. There are many options available in the Made To Order Market:

Design Your Own Eyewear:

Spective, bill themselves as the first create and sell eyewear platform. This site is for anyone who wants a one of kind pair of glasses, retail stores or budding eyewear designers who want to start their own line.

EDA (Eyewear Design Alliance) is for eyecare professionals, allowing them to offer the option of designing their custom eyewear.

Eye DNA offers EyeBeam  a custom machine which allows the ECP to laser engrave and customize eyewear.

Modular Eyewear including Interchangeable Temples and Lenses:  Interchangeable temples and parts have been around since the 1940’s. Several companies, Zenka and Plug and See offer ways to change the eyewear fronts. Interchangeable lenses are common, particularly in the sports eyewear space: Switch Vision, Adidas, Smith, WileyX.  New to the interchangeable lenses arena are Frameri. In fact if you go to most of the Kickstarter and or Indiegogo launches, most of them have some sort of ‘design your own or customized’ spiels.

For those who don’t want to carry inventory and are looking for independent and affordable lines, new and seen at Vision Expo is ClearVision Optical’s new modular and Design Your Own System. The wearer can choose the parts and colors via computer and the order is filled by the optician.

Rimless Shapes: Rimless is back and being led by companies such as Silhouette. There are millions of colors, shapes, adornments that are available via rimless. Companies are responding to give the ECP more options to customize the eyewear. Labs such as Luzerne have the ability to design and cut lenses in any shape.

Equipment companies such as AIT Industries have affordable edging equipment like the WECO E.6 / C.6 Edging System and Santinelli that allows creative ECP’s to design unique rimless eyewear. How much more Bespoke can you get!

Bespoke Eyewear: Bespoke is a category of fashion in which an item whether shoes or clothing or eyewear is made specifically for the wearer. Back in 2010 we listed a few companies who offered Bespoke as part of their product offerings. As you can imagine, we have seen this category grow with many individuals and eyecare professionals offering this type of product. There are three parts to this:

  • The eyewear retailer/wholesaler such as TD Tom Davis, Oliver Goldsmith and Anglo American and Rapp. These companies give the ECP the option to provide Bespoke to their patients.
  • Other eyewear retailers such as General Eyewear, Ed Beiner,Lee Allen Eyewear offer Bespoke services to their patients.
  • Then there are just the Bespoke Craftsman such as Wesley Knight and David Cox.
