Eyecare Charitable Donations

Cathy and I donate 10% of our annual income from this blog and our sister site www.opticalvisionresources.com. With so many needs it hard to decide where to donate those precious dollars. However, with so many of our optical friends and associates directly affected by Hurricane Sandy, we donated 5% of our 2012 income to Hurricane Sandy Relief efforts via The Salvation Army in November. Hunger is a global issue and we made this our charitable donation choice to bring us to 10%. The same as last year we made the decision to go half local and half global.

food bankFor local we chose the San Diego Food Bank . In partnership with over 350 local nonprofits, the San Diego Food Bank feeds over 350,000 people every month – totaling over 10% of the county’s population. The face of hunger in the United States has changed. Many people associate the Food Bank with those who are homeless, but the majority of the people they feed are low-income individuals and families who have homes but struggle daily to put food on the table. And increasingly in this tough economic climate middle class families are now seeking help from the Food Bank.

Taking the attitude of being globally aware as well as acting locally we decided to send the rest of our charitable donation dollars to Heifer International whose mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth. By giving families a hand-up, not just a hand-out, Heifer empowers them to turn lives of hunger and poverty into self-reliance and hope. With gifts of livestock and training, Heifer projects help families improve their nutrition and generate income in sustainable ways. We specified clean water and biogas stoves which run off methane gas captured from animal waste, eye boggling!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors and others in the optical industry that do so much to improve the lives of others. To name just a few:
