Today we are celebrating National Butterfly Day which is March 14 with a little bit of butterfly eye trivia. While the spots on butterfly wings look like eyes, they are not. Butterflies have two compound eyes located on their heads. A butterfly’s compound eye is composed of up to 17,000 ommatidia, all looking in a different direction and each one with its own lens. This means that the eyes can look in many directions at the same time. Butterflies also see ultraviolet light.
