Romancing The Shades: What Is Houndstooth?

A common pattern in fashion is houndstooth, albeit not so common in eyewear. So what is houndstooth?

Originating in Scotland, houndstooth, houndstooth check or hound’s tooth (dog check) is not really a plaid, is a two-tone pattern in textiles that are characterized by notched or broken checks or abstract four-pointed shapes, often seen in black and white. The traditional houndstooth check is made with alternating bands of four dark and four light threads in both warp and filling or weft woven in a simple 2:2 twill, two over – two under the warp, advancing one thread each pass. A little more confusing, a similar look is Glen Plaid (short for Glen Urquhart plaid or Prince of Wales Check) has alternating blocks of 2-on-2 and 4-on-4 colouring. It has an over-check in a bright or contrasting color. Glen plaid became popular in the 1930’s due to Edward VIII, when he was the Prince of Wales. This pattern ran very strong through the 1970’s.

The advantages of a black and white look in eyewear, you can wear it with anything and it will never go out of style. Don’t be afraid to display it with lots of color and it will stand it and attract attention.

In Merchandising, use a houndstooth pattern set again a contrasting color. It will make the eyewear stand out against an illusionist pattern  .
