Ransomeware On The Rise

Police Ransomeware

You have probably heard of Ransomware, but in case you haven’t,  Ransomware is another type of malware which restricts access to the computer system that it infects, and demands a ransom paid to the creator(s) of the malware in order for the restriction to be removed. (Wikipedia)

What happens, you can’t log on and a screen holds your files hostage until you pay a ransom for excess. Ransom can be a few hundred dollars. So low, it becomes better to pay the ransom than hire someone to get rid of it for you.

‘Intel Security, a unit of Intel Corp., said it reviewed more than 250,000 new ransomware samples in the fourth quarter of 2014, up 155% from the previous quarter. And the Internet Crime Complaint Center, a partnership between the FBI and the nonprofit National White Collar Crime Center, said businesses and individuals submitted 2,275 ransomware complaints from June 1, 2014, to March 31 of this year, with reported losses totaling more than $1.1 million’

‘Symantec. The maker of anti-virus software reported 8.8 million incidents of ransomware attacks last year, more than double the total from 2013. The company estimates on average, 3 percent of users with infected machines pay a ransom. Ransomware accounted for about 1 percent of complaints about all kinds of cybercrime, but most attacks go unreported because people or businesses are embarrassed about having been hacked or paid a ransom.’ (San Diego Union Tribune)

Tips

  • Don’t open suspicious Email. There is nothing that dire, that you have to open all email
  • Use Security Software, that may or may not be able to keep up with the ever-changing malware.
  • Keep your computer- websites up to date. Most new updates have to do with security.. Gotta do it.
  • Back up Files and they should be backed up in a system not directly connected to a computer or network.
